Lavishly's Lines for Week #14

12-0 Chicago Mustangs @ 1-11 Tulsa Revolution  I am guessing that the Mustangs will go into Tulsa and beat the doors out the Revolution in front of their home crowd.  The Mustangs just have too much speed and offense for the first year Tulsa team.  Chicago -9.5 o/u 20

11-2 Las Vegas Legends @ 11-2 Dallas Sidekicks  I will be watching this game on America One to see if the Legends can hand the Sidekicks their first home loss of the season.  Las Vegas already has a potent offense that can score in bunches, but the addition of Luis Piffer to the Legend defense makes this team an even more deadly threat.  Dallas hasn't loss at home this season, and in order to avoid losing this game they need to avoid giving Las Vegas the man advantage, which they lead the league in at a 61% conversion rate.  If the Legends are on the man advantage, then they need to cover Felipe Gonzalez who leads the league with 10 powerplay goals.  On top of all of that, Ricardino Sobreira, Israel Sesay, and Ivan Campos all have the ability to shred defenses, especially with Tovar dealing out the ball.  This will be a true test for Dallas at home.  Las Vegas -.5 o/u 15

4-9 Turlock Express @ 4-8 Ontario Fury  These are both teams that didn't live up to expectations this season.  Ontario will get the win at home with ease but they are out of the playoffs and need to keep working on building their fan base as well as preparing for next season. Ontario -4.5 o/u 16

7-5 Mexico Toros @ 11-3 San Diego Sockers  San Diego hosts their southern neighbors in a game that will be attended by Baseballer Adrian Gonzalez.  I will be trying to get a card signed and a picture of him with my son, but the game will be a fun one to watch.  The Sockers know better than to sleep on any team from Tijuana, so they will be ready for the Toros. San Diego -7.5 o/u 16

2-11 Sacramento Surge @ 6-8 Bay Area Rosal  If there was one player that stood out to me when Bay Area played San Diego, it was #2 Stephan Clemens. Both my buddy Tim and I commented on how he was one of the few players on the Bay Area team that looked like he belonged, I would not be surprised to see him picked up by another team next year.  Emrah Klimenta, Rosal's points leader, didn't play in the San Diego game.  If Bay Area can play with both Clemens and Klimenta, as well as suit up at least 8 other of their top guys, then Rosal wins.  Bay Area -4.5 o/u 14

9-4 Cleveland Freeze @ 7-5 Detroit Waza Flo  If I am lucky I can catch the beginning of this game on Go Live before I have to leave to go watch the Sockers at VVCC.  This is a preview of the playoffs and a chance to see who is the most prepared for the postseason.  In the last game Dominic Scicluna suited up and handed the coaching duties over to assistant coach Matt Johnson.  I don't know if Johnson will be coaching again this game, but the addition of Dominic to the lineup brings even more playoff experience to an already outstanding veteran lineup.  Cleveland, on the other hand, beat the Waza at home in a wildly emotional physical battle that recorded a total of 55 fouls and 12 powerplay oppertunities.  Now the Freeze have to go into Detroit and try to pick up their first win at the Melvindale Civic Center.  In the last game, Ostergren, Grossman, and Green combined for 12 goals, and Allen Eller had 7 assists, while the team went 7 for 9 on powerplay opportunities.  If they can keep their offense clicking the Freeze can pick up a win in Detroit, but the Waza have only lost at home twice, and that was early in the season.  The Waza edge it out at home.  Detroit -.5 o/u 12.5

12-0 Chicago Mustangs @ 6-6 Wichita B-52's  This game doubles as a US Open Cup game, and if Wichita could pull off the win at home it would be huge.  The B-52's have had a good season so far being a new team in the PASL and playing in the Central Division.  Making it to the Final Four in the US Open Cup would be a big achievement for the upstart B-52's, but Chicago is rolling and will beat out the home team in Wichita and move on to the semi-finals.  Chicago -4.5 o/u 16

4-8 Cincinnati Saints @ 1-11 Illinois Piasa  I don't know what is going on with the Piasa, I can only assume that it is not ideal.  Cincinatti -2.5 o/u 14

US OPEN CUP FINAL FOUR PREDICTION
I could have done this a while ago because after Hidalgo knocked out Dallas, Las Vegas knocked out San Diego, and Harrisburg knocked out Detroit it all seemed pretty evident barring any huge upsets.

1. Chicago Mustangs
2. Cleveland Freeze
3. Hidalgo La Fiera
4. Las Vegas Legends

Power Rankings after Week #13

First of all I would like to thank Eric Roberts, Tom Andrews, Christopher Funk, Bill Norris, Ed Dravecky, Michael N Brown, Greg Ponto Suttie, Bret Swinney, for reading and commenting on last weeks Power Ranking.

In the Power Rankings I will, first of all, put the top ten teams in my Stable.  Then, I will put the rest of The Herd out to pasture (in no particular order).  Finally, I will name The Deuce, the two teams in the PASL that are stinking up the outhouse.

THE STABLE

1. Chicago Mustangs  I will keep Chicago at #1 being that they are 12-0 and have secured a final 4 spot in the Ron Newman Cup Finals.  Chicago, who is still in the US Open Cup, will have to beat the B-52's this weekend to make it into the final four.

2. Hidalgo La Fiera  11-2 La Fiera have three games left this season against three teams with a combined 6 wins and 32 losses.  Their hardest game will probably be on the road against Saltillo, but from here it seems as if Hidalgo will finish the season at 14-2 and win the Division.  La Fiera is also in the Open Cup and will have to fend off Austin F.C. this weekend to advance to the final four.

3. Las Vegas Legends  11-2 Las Vegas has a tough game on the road against the Sidekicks at the Allen Events Center, but will return home to face the Ontario Fury two more time is the regular season.  Las Vegas will have to beat Bay Area Rosal to advance to the Final Four of the Open Cup.

4. San Diego Sockers  The Sockers are coming off of a very successful road trip to Mexico where they dispatched both Saltillo and Monterrey.  They will finish off the season with two games at home against the Fury and Toros.

5. Monterrey Flash  The Flash were handed their first home loss of the season this weekend, but more importantly they were set back in their bid for playoff home field advantage.  The Flash's last scheduled regular season game is against Saltillo Rancho Seco on Feb. 12.  Assuming that they win that game, Monterrey will be sitting on a 13-3 regular season record.

6. Dallas Sidekicks  Dallas won't likely be the Central Division Champion like I predicted in Week #5, but they still could finish the season like I predicted at 14-2, but first they need to beat the Legends this weekend.  If the full Las Vegas squad can make the trip, then the Sidekicks will have their hands full.

7. Cleveland Freeze  After getting blown out by the Mustangs last week in Chicago, the Freeze will have to travel to Detroit and try and beat the Detroit Waza.  I also forgot to mention that the Freeze are in the semifinals of the US Open Cup, but will most likely play the Mustangs who have had Cleveland's number all season.

8. Detroit Waza Flo  Detroit handled the Cincinnati Saints last weekend and now look to beat the Cleveland Freeze at the Melvindale Civic Center in their third straight home game. The Waza look ready for the playoff with their offense clicking, but the Freeze have beaten Detroit in the past.

9. Mexico Toros  Mexico blew out the Sacramento Surge in Tijuana and it looks like the Toros will once again find themselves in the Playoffs.

10. Wichita B-52's  Wichita just beat the Tulsa Revolution and will face the Chicago Mustangs this weekend in an attempt to make it into the US Open Cup final four.  The B-52's have 4 games left in the regular season, but the games against Chicago and Dallas will give them the most problems.

THE HERD

  • Cincinnati Saints
  • Harrisburg Heat
  • Saltillo Rancho Seco
  • Bay Area Rosal
  • Turlock Express
  • Ontario Fury
  • Illinois Piasa
  • Tulsa Revolution

THE DEUCE

1. Sacramento Surge  I put the Surge in the Deuce because they lost 20-1 against Las Vegas, and then turned around and lost to the Toros 20-6 the very next day.

2. Texas Strikers  Texas is still looking for their first win of the season.

Lavishly's Lines Week #13

10-0 Chicago Mustangs @ 4-7 Harrisburg Heat  This is the first of a two game series that the Heat have with the Mustangs, the last two home games for the Heat, and the last two games that Richard Chinapoo will coach the team at the Farm Show Arena.  Chicago -6 over/under 16

5-6 Wichita B-52's @ 1-10 Tulsa Revolution  The B-52's have beaten the Revolution twice so far but this could be the night Tulsa wins their second game ever.  Wichita -1 o/u 10

2-9 Sacramento Surge @ 10-2 Las Vegas Legends  Surge have no chance.  Las Vegas -8 o/u 12

4-7 Cincinnati Saints @ 6-5 Detroit Waza Flo  Detroit will win this with ease as they tune up for the postseason.  Detroit -5 o/u 15

0-12 Texas Strikers @ 10-2 Dallas Sidekicks  Dallas will run up the score.  Dallas -11 o/u 15

10-0 Chicago Mustangs @ 4-7 Harrisburg Heat  Unfortunately, legendary coach Richard Chinapoo will finish out his last two games at home with losses, but his team will put forward their best effort out of respect for all that he has done for the Heat.  Chicago -2 o/u 14

4-8 Turlock Express @ 5-8 Bay Area Rosal  Bay Area wins at home after losing 2 on the road. Bay Area -2 o/u 12

9-3 San Diego Sockers @ 5-6 Saltillo Rancho Seco  The thing that scares me the most about San Diego going to Mexico and playing is injuries.  I would rather San Diego send their reserves to Saltillo and Monterrey and avoid losing a player to injury than try and win both games, but they wont.  The Saltillo game should go down without any hangups.  San Diego -3 o/u 15

2-9 Sacramento Surge @ 6-5 Mexico Toros  Mexico wins at home and gets closer to securing the third playoff spot in the Pacific.  Mexico -4 o/u 16

9-3 San Diego Sockers @ 12-2 Monterrey Flash  This game is the one that scares me, not because I am worried about the Sockers losing, because that has no real effect on the Sockers who have already secured a spot in the playoffs, but because all of the travel and the game against Saltillo the night before.  I just think that the the Sockers are at an increased risk for injury and Monterrey is where I fear it will happen.  Monterrey -2 o/u 14

5-6 Saltillo Rancho Seco @ 10-2 Hidalgo La Fiera  Hidalgo wins at home against a fatigued Rancho Seco.  Hidalgo -10 o/u 16

RON NEWMAN CUP FINAL FOUR

1. Chicago Mustangs  The Mustangs have the guaranteed spot as the hosts.

2. Detroit Waza Flo  Detroit is a veteran team that knows how to play in big games, they have the ability to climb back into games when they start out slow, and they have experienced players that know how to win playoff games.  They will get hot when it counts and make a serious run at the Championship.

3. San Diego Sockers  The Sockers will need to beat division rival Las Vegas to get to this spot, and it won't be easy, but beating the Sockers twice in a row will be too much for the Legends, especially with a full Sockers defensive roster.

4. Monterrey Flash  Hidalgo and Dallas are both great teams, but it will be the Sidekicks lack of a competitive schedule and Hidalgo's inability to control emotions and foul trouble that will hurt them in the end.

A Whole Lot To Gain, And A Whole Lot More To Lose

Chicago has the best record in the PASL, both Massey Ratings and The Indoor Outhouse have them as the number one team in the PASL, though the Indoor Outhouse has them there for different reasons, they are undefeated this year, and now they are renting out the Sears Center in Chicago to host the 2013-2014 Ron Newman Cup Finals.  If the Mustangs are lucky, the PASL could gift them the other qualifying team from the Eastern Conference, where Chicago went undefeated, in their first game, guaranteeing an Eastern Conference team in the Finals, most likely Chicago.  But I doubt that the league front office would manipulate the tournament like that.  Right?  Or do they run the risk of having an East vs East final?

The Mustangs have the opportunity to go undefeated for the whole season, fill the seats with up to 9,000 fans, host two great games at home and reap all of the financial benefits from that, expose the sport and the team to a large Chicago audience and grow the fan base, and most importantly, win the Ron Newman Cup, being the first non-Californian team to do so in the history of the PASL.  If the Chicago Mustangs could do that they would be considered one of the greatest teams ever in the PASL, and the second team ever to go undefeated in a season.  They are also still in the hunt for the US Open Cup and could also win that on top of everything else.

On the other hand, things could go South from the start.  Imagine if Chicago struggled to fill the seats in their first game, considering that their biggest crowd all year was 1,216, and then lost their first semi-final game.  Not only would their season end there, but so would the undefeated streak, they would be 0-1 in the playoffs and 0-1 against non-divisional opponents this year, and they would be known as the team that owned the regular season, but blew it in the Playoffs.  I remember in 2011 when the Cincinnati Kings hosted the finals.  They were first PASL team eliminated, and in the championship game, San Diego went on to win the title in front of a handful of people in a virtually empty Cincinnati Gardens.  Cincinnati went on to miss the playoff the following year, never won a playoff game or made the finals again, and then folded as an indoor team in the PASL.  Chicago runs a huge risk, the same risk that the Sockers organization ran last year, of losing their first game and dropping a ton of money hosting a final for two teams other than the home team.  That would be a complete disaster.  The Chicago Mustangs are under an awful lot of pressure.  It would be a terrible thing to see them choke at that critical moment and lose everything.

Last year's Ron Newman Cup Finals in San Diego were awesome!  In the first game Detroit won an awesome game against the Rio Grande Valley Flash 6-5 in overtime.  I was sitting next to the field with the Zellers and watching that physical battle from beginning to end was highly entertaining.  Then the Sockers edged out Las Vegas in fiercely competitive game that went into overtime and ended in dramatic fashion with the Sockers winning 6-5.  Then in the Ron Newman Cup Final, San Diego bested the Detroit Waza in a historic game that saw Detroit climb back in the game after trailing early, leading Craig Elsten to coin the phrase, "Don't count out the Detroit Waza, EVER!!!"  That game could have gone either way, but it was San Diego that caught the lucky bounce at the end of the game and walked away victorious.

Given the excitement of last years games, there is extra pressure on this year's Ron Newman Cup Final to produce an exciting three matches for the fans.  One thing that is left to be unanswered is how the Eastern Division can hold up to the rest of the PASL?  Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, and Cincinnati, the 4 most likely teams to fill the 2 reserved spots for the East in the final four, have not played an non-divisional opponent this whole season.  Can these Ron Newman Cup final games live up to the standard of excellence set by the Flash, the Legends, the Waza, and the Sockers in last years finals?  We shall see in what looks to be an excellent ending to the 2013-2014 PASL season.

Power Rankings after Week #12

First of all, I would like to thank Brian Zellers, RJ Pooch, Rose Shoen, Christopher Funk, Steve Caves, Greg Ponto Suttie, and Sydney Nusinov for reading and commenting on the Power Rankings from last week.

In the Power Rankings I will, first of all, put the top ten teams in my Stable.  Then, I will put the rest of The Herd out to pasture (in no particular order).  Finally, I will name The Deuce, the two teams in the PASL that are stinking up the outhouse.

THE STABLE

1. Chicago Mustangs  Congratulations to the Chicago Mustangs for earning the opportunity to host the Ron Newman Cup Finals.  Chicago has the best regular season record at an impressive 10-0 deserve to get the opportunity host the Finals.

I read in an article on-line last week a coach mention that the Ron Newman Cup was expected to be in Chicago, and of course I can't find that article after looking for the past 2 hours.  I remember telling my wife, but we both were pulling for Ontario, so we didn't didn't want to believe it and take the news to heart, but we both new that it was going to be Chicago.  I am just bummed because I love going and watching the best teams in the league compete.

2. Monterrey Flash  The Flash just beat the Strikers at home after losing to La Fiera in Hidalgo, but Monterrey and Hidalgo are 2-2 this season against each other, but I think Hidalgo is right with the Flash.

3. Hidalgo La Fiera  They are right their with the Flash, I think that home field advantage will play a huge factor if these two teams meet in the post season.

4. Las Vegas Legends  The Legends made the trip to Turlock this weekend and picked up a victory.

5. San Diego Sockers  San Diego ran a 60 min power play on Bay Area on Saturday and then went to Ontario and beat a quality Fury team.

6. Dallas Sidekicks  Dallas beat the Revolution for the 4th and final time for the season.

7. Cleveland Freeze  They got the pants beat off them in Chicago but had beaten Detroit on the 11th so I will put them one above the Waza.

8. Detroit Waza Flo  Detroit didn't play last week, but will suit up against Cincinnati at home this weekend.

9. Mexico Toros  Mexico beat Bay Area at home and will probably secure the third spot in the playoffs from the Pacific Division.

10. Harrisburg Heat  The Heat beat Cincinnati last weekend to take the 10th spot in the Stable

THE HERD

  • Cincinnati Saints
  • Illinois Piasa
  • Saltillo Rancho Seco
  • Wichita B-52's
  • Turlock Express
  • Bay Area Rosal
  • Ontario Fury
  • Sacramento Surge
THE DEUCE

1. Texas Strikers  The Strikers are the only winless team in the PASL and will be the Sidekicks' whipping boy as Dallas trys to score as many points as they can against them at the Allen Events Center.

2.  Tulsa Revolution  The only team that they can beat is the Strikers.

Lavishly's Lines Week #12

9-2 Las Vegas Legends @ 4-7 Turlock Express  Las Vegas travels up to Turlock for their only game of the weekend against the Express.  If the full squad makes the trip then Las Vegas walks away from this one with a win.  Las Vegas -4.5 over/under 15

9-3 Cleveland Freeze @ 9-0 Chicago Mustangs  Chicago is firmly in control of the East with a 9-0 record, but I think that record ends this Saturday.  Of course I will favor Chicago in the spread, but I think that Cleveland has come far enough this year to be able to go into the Grand Sports Arena and stun the Mustangs in front of the home crowd.  Chicago -3 o/u 17

9-2 Dallas Sidekicks @ 1-9 Tulsa Revolution  This will be the 4th and final time that Dallas plays the Revolution this year. Maybe after seeing the Sidekicks so many times, Tulsa figures out a way to scratch out a win at home, but that is unlikely.  Dallas -4 o/u 14

1-10 Illinois Piasa @ 4-6 Wichita B-52's  Maybe the recent shakeup in Pontoon Beach will lead to Illinois picking up their first road game of the season.  Wichita -4 o/u 12

5-6 Bay Area Rosal @ 7-3 San Diego Sockers I am assuming that McNeley, Martin, and Velez won't be playing, so the Sockers defense will be hampered.  Rosal's Bronil Koochoie was just traded back to Dallas after coming to the team on the 23rd of last month, and Dominik Jakubek, their veteran keeper with 3 win and 1 loss this season, was recently released from Rosal.  This will be Rosal's first time playing San Diego this season, and their first time they will play in front of crowd larger than 700 people, with the game this Friday being free to the Military, who knows how many people will show up.  San Diego -4 o/u 18

4-6 Cincinnati Saints @ 3-7 Harrisburg Heat  I saw some of the post game interviews that some of the Saints players did after their win over Harrisburg last week, and it seemed like all the players interviewed were buying in to new coach Chris Morman's strategy and game philosophy.  Cincinnati is only 1.5 games out of the last playoff spot which is currently held by Detroit.  Cincinnati -1 o/u 12

11-1 Monterrey Flash @ 9-2 Hidalgo La Fiera  Their last game against each other was very physical, both teams went on the man advantage a combined 13 times, but Monterrey was 2-8 and Hidalgo was 1-5.  The team that can stay out of the penalty box and convert powerplays will win this game.  Hidalgo -1 o/u 13

0-10 Texas Strikers @ 4-6 Saltillo Rancho Seco  Saltillo has lost their last two games at home against Monterrey and Hidalgo, so the Strikers will be a welcomed challenge before having to face San Diego in the last game of their six game home stand.  Saltillo -6 o/u 14

5-6 Bay Area Rosal @ 5-5 Mexico Toros  Both Rosal and Toros are fighting for that last playoff spot in the Pacific, and Rosal will be coming off of game in San Diego the night before.  This will be a tough match, but Mexico will keep their 3rd spot at home.  Mexico -2 o/u 14

7-3 San Diego Sockers @ 4-7 Ontario Fury  Still assuming that San Diego will be playing without key players, San Diego will still be playing their 2nd game in 2 days and will have to spend at least 2 hours on the road.  This is probably the best chance that the Fury have at upsetting the Sockers of any game in the regular season.  San Diego -2 o/u 18

0-10 Texas Strikers @ 11-1 Monterrey Flash  The last time Texas went into Monterrey, the Flash won 12-1.  But the Flash will be coming off of a game in Hidalgo.  Monterrey -10 o/u 14

Power Rankings after Week #11

First of all, I would like to thank Dominic Scicluna, Scotty Martin, Melissa David, RJ Pooch, Greg Ponto Suttie, Christopher Funk, Ed Dravecky, Chava Manzo, and Alan Balthrop for reading and commenting on last weeks Power Rankings.

In the Power Rankings I will, first of all, put the top ten teams in my Stable.  Then, I will put the rest of The Herd out to pasture (in no particular order).  Finally, I will name The Deuce, the two teams in the PASL that are stinking up the outhouse.

THE STABLE

1. Monterrey Flash  They beat La Fiera at home without any hangups and improved to 11-1 on the season, but now they have to go back to Hidalgo next week to face their division rival La Fiera for the 4th and last time of this regular season.

2. Chicago Mustangs  They are 8-0 and have beat the Illinois Piasa twice in a row, that is impressive right?  They sure would fall hard if Cleveland were to end their winning streak next week.

3. Hidalgo La Fiera  I think their biggest problem is that they served almost 30 minutes of a 60 minute game in the penalty box and they will be a few men short the next time around with the Flash.

4. Las Vegas Legends  The Legends are a dangerous team with speed, crisp passing, and the ability to score in bunches.  With Qeeks Tovar leading the team, Ivan Campos scoring and dealing out the ball, and Ricardino, Felipe Gonzalez, and Alex Caceras, who are speedy goal scorers that keep the opposing defense on their heels, and add to that Israel Sesay and Zeke Sanchez in goal, dangerous.

5. Cleveland Freeze  Allen Eller and Stefan Ostergren are having career seasons and are key parts in the improvement and success of  the Freeze in their inaugural PASL season.  The Freeze just beat Detroit and I think they will end the Mustangs undefeated streak this Saturday.

6. Dallas Sidekicks  After losing to Hidalgo, the Sidekicks handed 4-6 Wichita their 3rd loss of the season, beat 0-10 Texas, now they will face 1-9 Tulsa for the 4th time this season before facing 0-10 Texas again.

7. San Diego Sockers  The Sockers were already hurting last Saturday with McNeley and Martin sitting the game out, but to have Velez get the boot really hurt the Sockers defensively.  That is still no excuse for how terrible their first half was against the Legends.

8. Detroit Waza Flo  Detroit stays at #8 after losing to the Freeze in Cleveland and then traveling home to beat divisional rival the Harrisburg Heat.  That Game with the Freeze was a wild one with 55 fouls and 51 minutes in penalties.  Detroit is 3-4 on the powerplay over their last 2 games and will continue their 4 game home stand taking on the Cincinnati Saints on Saturday, and then turn around and host the Illinois Piasa on Sunday.

9. Mexico Toros  Mexico is 5-5 and is coming off a win against the Legends at home.  Mexico will play 6 games in less than a month with 2 games against Sacramento, 2 against Bay Area, and 1 against Turlock and San Diego.  Mexico has a great shot at making it into the postseason where anything can happen, especially if they get hot at the right time.

10. Cincinnati Saints  All I had left to fill the 10 spot in my Stable were teams with losing records, so I think that Cincinnati is the best team with a losing record right now and they are coming off of a win against the Harrisburg Heat.

THE HERD

  • Harrisburg Heat
  • Illinois Piasa
  • Saltillo Rancho Seco
  • Wichita B-52's
  • Tulsa Revolution
  • Bay Area Rosal
  • Turlock Express
  • Ontario Fury
  • Sacramento Surge

THE DEUCE

1.  Texas Strikers  .000 win percentage

2.  The Sockers first half of play last Saturday   PEEEWWWWW!!!  That stinks!!!  I have had some deuces dropped in the outhouse before, but there is no aerosol spray made that can cover up that stink.  I had to lick my armpits to get that funky taste out of my mouth.  If I was my old man I would be lighting matches all night.  I have been wiping my son's ass for three years and I have never seen or smelt anything like that.

Sport = Drama

Sport is great drama.  It is live theater that unfolds itself on the playing field and often follows the classic story arch of building suspense, which culminates to a climactic resolution.  The beauty of sport is it's ability to create lasting narratives that can define players, teams, organizations, cities and nations.

What makes a great narrative in literature is a great rivalry.  What would Romeo and Juliet be without the Montagues and Capulets, the West Side Story without the Sharks or the Jets, and the Outsiders without the Socs and Greasers?  Rivalries aren't just in the pages of a book, but everywhere.  Coke vs Pepsi, Chevy vs Ford, Ali vs Frasier, Ohio State vs Michigan, Manchester City vs Manchester United,  Sargent Slaughter vs The Iron Sheik, Seattle Sounders vs Portland Timbers, and Yankees vs Red Sox, just to name a few.  The beauty of a rivalry is not the antipathy that one side feels towards the other, or the creative ways that fans show their disdain for the opposing team, but the ability of a rivalry to bring out the absolute best in someone.  Just as Moriarty brought out the best of Sherlock Holmes, Bird brought out the best of Magic, Kahn brought out the best of Captain Kirk, and Ivan Drago brought out the best of Rocky IV, rivalries have the ability to elicit the highest level of performance from the greats.

Some of the best games of the 2009-2010 PASL season were between the San Diego Sockers and the Stockton Cougars.  Whenever these two teams played each other that season, as a spectator, you knew that you were going to see a great game, but sadly the Cougars are no more.  Then came the Anaheim Bolts, which at first showed promise to be a good rivalry, but to have a good rivalry both teams need to be able to win some games, and that was not the case.  Sadly, the Anaheim Bolts never lasted long enough to see a Bolts win over the Sockers, and they too are no more.  Dallas has a rivalry going with the Sockers, but it is not the divisional type where the two side face off numerous times in a season.

I am kinda glad that the Sockers lost to the Legends on Saturday night, because it isn't a rivalry if one team keeps beating the other team every time they face each other.  Plus, if we are going to lose to the Legends, it is better to do it in the regular season instead of the postseason where the season ends with a loss.  Both games that the Sockers played against the Legends last year were awesome.  Both games came down to the end, and both games ended with spectacular finishes.  When the Sockers went to Las Vegas this year, who were playing without Gonzalez and Richadino, I knew the easy win was not typical and that the next match would be different, and it was.

The Legends are fast.  When I went to Ontario to watch the Fury host the Legends, the thing that I took away from that game was the speed and scoring ability of the Legends and for the Fury Israel Sesay's speed and the finishing touch of Tino Nunez.  When I heard that Sesay had joined up with the Legends I knew that an already potent offense just became even more dangerous, and it showed on Saturday night.  The shock and disbelief that swept through the Valley View Casino Center after the Legends leaped to a 7-1 lead was palpable.  I remember laughing because I was in such shock at what I was seeing on the field, and how stumped the Sockers were at what was happening in their house.  Austin, Mink, and I just looked at each other just dumbfounded.  There was one goal that just rolled into the net that reminded me of playing Foosball and having the ball slowly roll by your men as your spin and twist in vain trying to stop it with no luck.

Velez's Elbow to Sesay

I honestly didn't look at the PASL fan page on Facebook until I got home from work on Monday afternoon, and when I did I saw a number of threads with dozens of posts.  People were up in arms about the behavior of some of the Legends personnel, others were claiming that Sockers fans complaints were just sour grapes, people were brutal and cutthroat, and the emotions left over from the last weekends games were tangible.  Now I am going to weigh in on what I think about the play  that sent Velez off the field and Sesay to the locker room.  Are you ready?  What I have to say is profound, it is a game changer.  Are you sure you are ready?  Here we go!!!......Didn't see it.  I was checking the score of the New England vs Indy game on my phone wondering why the hell I picked the Colts over Brady and Belichick.  I mean the Pats go to the postseason all of the time, and I, like a dumbass, picked the team that pulled off a miracle win after turning the ball over repeatedly.  Then I was cursing Ron Jaworski for putting the damn idea in my head that the Colts could win.  And that brings me to another point.  I know Craig Elsten reads my stuff once in a while, and I want to thank him for putting that last caller to his show on Sunday night in his place.  The guy calls up comparing Jaws to Rivers and saying that we should have never got rid of Brees and Marty.  When I hear people bring up Marty I usually roll my eyes, but then saying to keep Brees, well that was a first for me.  Chargers fans should be happy with our season this year, no one expected the Bolts to go to the postseason, let alone win a playoff game.  The Chargers deficiencies are obvious and if we can bring in some free agents to fill those gaps, we are going to have a hell of a team next year.  But back to the Velez foul.  When he got the red card I was pissed.  We were already missing McNeley and Martin on defense, and then Velez goes gets thrown out at the beginning of the game.  That just put the Sockers in an even worse position.  In my opinion, every thing that happened that night, the good, the bad, and the ugly, has the makings of what looks to be a great rivalry in the future.  Maybe the Legends will be to the Sockers what the Raiders are to the Chargers, or the Dodgers to the Padres?  What do you think?

 Not All Bad

There were some highlight to the night that I will never forget,  Like meeting Sydney Nusinov and chatting with him for a moment.  I also got two of my old Sockers trading cards signed by Paul Dougherty and Waad Hirmez after the halftime presentation.  They were all very gracious.

Lavishly's Lines Week #11

1-8 Tulsa @ 3-6 Wichita  Wichita just played and lost to Dallas two times in a row, but what they learned will make them a better team.  I think that they should be able to pull off the win at home against a Tulsa team that also is improving and learning about itself as a team in their first year in the PASL.  Wichita -2 o/u 14

3-6 Ontario @ 2-7 Turlock  Who knows what Ontario team will show up in Turlock to play the Express.  So far they have not fielded the same team on the road that they have at home, and I can only assume that they will not suite up their whole team.  Ontario -1 o/u 14

2-7 Turlock @ 2-8 Sacramento  I think Sacramento is on a roll after beating Bay Area and they will pick up a close win at home against the Express.  Sacramento -1 o/u 11

8-1 Las Vegas @ 7-2 San Diego  The Sockers are rolling, but Las Vegas has picked up a shiny new weapon for their arsenal in Israel Sesay that will help them in their game against the Sockers at the VVCC.  The Legends didn't show up the last time these two teams played in Las Vegas so I would not be surprised to see a determined Tovar bring out the best in his team.  San Diego -2.5 o/u 15

5-4 Detroit @ 8-3 Cleveland  Detroit travels to Cleveland to try and pick away at the Freeze's lead over the Waza in the East, but Cleveland will not go down without a fight.  Detroit is coming off of two back to back wins against Cincinnati and seems to playing improved soccer compared to their sluggish start to the season.  Detroit will play division rival Cleveland 3 more times before the end of the season where they will try and hold on to the third spot in the Eastern division and sneak into the playoffs.  Cleveland -1 o/u 17

8-2 Dallas @ 0-8 Texas  Dallas hasn't really been blowing weaker teams out of the this season, so my guess is Dallas -6 o/u 12

3-5 Harrisburg @ 3-6 Cincinnati  Harrisburg, who has probably the toughest second half of the season out of any team in the PASL, has to face Chicago 3 times, Dallas once, and Detroit once.  If they want to make it to the playoff they need to start winning, but it won't come easy against the Saints.  Cincinnati just picked up a new coach and maybe the boost of new leadership will spark the Saints to a winning run that could possibly put them into the third and final playoff spot in the East.  Cincinnati -1 o/u 15

8-0 Chicago @ 1-9 Illinois  Chicago -7 o/u 13

3-6 Ontario @ 5-5 Bay Area  After seeing the result of the Ontario game against Turlock I have decided to set the line at Bay Area -1 o/u 12

7-1 Hidalgo @ 4-5 Saltillo Hidalgo makes trip to Saltillo, who is in the middle of their 6 game home stand.  I predict that Saltillo puts up a big fight and give La Fiera a run for their money in front of the Rancho Seco home crowd.  Hidalgo -1 o/u 17

8-1 Las Vegas @ 4-5 Mexico Getting a win in Tijuana is never easy, but Las Vegas is a good enough team to make the adjustments necessary to come out of Mexico with a win.  This will be a hard fought battle and the Legends will be fatigued from the game the night before in SD.  Las Vegas -0.5 o/u 14

3-5 Harrisburg @ 5-4 Detroit  The Heat have faced off with the Waza three times so far this season, and they have won twice, but Detroit won't let this one go at home.  Both teams will be coming off of games the night before and be dealing with the fatigue of travel.  Detroit -2 o/u 12

7-1 Hidalgo @ 10-1 Monterrey  This is turning out to be one of the best rivalries in the PASL and everyone of their games this season has came down to overtime.  I will give Monterrey the spread only because they are at home and La Fiera will be fatigued, but both teams have the potential to win this one.  Monterrey -1 o/u 11

Power Rankings after Week #10

First of all I would like to thank Dominic Scicluna, Brian Zellers, Xochitl Meza, Emmy G Arteaga, Karl Baeker, Greg Ponto Suttie, Rey Silva, Patrick Fisher, RJ Pooch, Craig Elsten, Sydney Nusinov, and Melissa David for reading and commenting on Week #8's Power Rankings.

In the Power Rankings I will, first of all, put the top ten teams in my Stable.  Then, I will put the rest of The Herd out to pasture (in no particular order).  Finally, I will name The Deuce, the two teams in the PASL that are stinking up the outhouse.

THE STABLE

1. Monterrey Flash  The Flash are coming off of a commanding win in Saltillo and will now face rival Hidalgo La Fiera in their next two games.  This will be a huge 2 games for the Central Division as the 2 top teams battle it out twice in a row, once in Monterrey and once in Hidalgo.  I think that the Flash should be at the #1 spot because they are strong on both sides of the ball, they are good on the man advantage, they have the second best penalty kill in the league, and they have indoor defensive legend Genoni Martinez, not only coaching the team, but is second in the league in assists and tied for first with shots blocked.

2. San Diego Sockers San Diego has won 7 in a row, they beat the Fury soundly at home, and went into Tijuana and beat the Toros 12-7 in a physical battle.  It seems as if the pieces are beginning to fit and the team is starting to play as one.  That was the biggest thing I took away from the game against the Fury, the fact that the team looked like one singular conciseness on the field.  They seemed like a team who knew where everyone else was on the field, and what each others next move was going to be.  Lets just hope they can keep it rolling next week when Las Vegas comes to town.

3. Hidalgo La Fiera  They beat division rivals Monterrey and Dallas in Hidalgo and are coming off of a win on the road where they beat the pants off of Texas by 11 goals.  They are good on special teams, they have one of the best goalies in Juan Gamboa, and have won 8 games in a row.  If they can pull off a win against the Flash in Monterrey they will be the best team in the Central, and maybe in the PASL.

4. Chicago Mustangs  I know that many people think that the Chicago Mustangs deserve to be in the #1 spot because they are undefeated, but I disagree.  First of all, the power ranking are not based on win percentage alone, if that were the case,  Las Vegas would be the 3rd best team in the league and San Diego would be the 6th best team in the league.  Secondly, the Mustangs have only beat one team this season that have a winning record, Cleveland.  Cleveland is a brand new expansion team this season, and when Chicago did play the Freeze, they spanked them.  Detroit, who the Mustangs beat twice, struggled at the beginning of the season, but now seem to righting the ship.  Thirdly, one of the things that the Mustangs did this season was win two back to back games on the road, which many teams have struggled to do this season, but not all of them.  Hidalgo, Las Vegas, Monterrey, and San Diego have also won back to back games on the road.  Fourthly, Chicago is the worst team in the league when it comes to scoring on the powerplay.  The Mustangs have gone on the powerplay 20 times, but only converted 3 times averaging 15%.    Finally, in my opinion, the Eastern Division is the weakest of the three Divisions, and if Monterrey, Hidalgo, San Diego, Dallas, or Las Vegas were in Chicago's position, they too would be undefeated on the season.  On the other hand, Chicago does have the best penalty kill in the PASL at 88%, they have Wilo Martinez and Miguel Vaca leading the team in points, and one of the best goalies in Jesus Flores.

5. Dallas Sidekicks  After losing to Hidalgo on the road, Dallas was able to beat Wichita in Dallas and then go on the road to shut out the B-52's in Wichita.  The biggest thing plaguing the Sidekicks it that they have a weak schedule, which I think could come back to bite them in the ass late in the playoffs.  They do have two solid goalies, quality veteran leadership, and a team of solid experienced players.

6. Cleveland Freeze  Whipping a terrible team like the Piasa at home is no big feat, but the Freeze are on a 6 game winning streak and are getting better with every game that they play.  They face the Detroit Waza Flo next week and the Chicago Mustangs the week after that in what will be a litmus test of the Eastern Division.  The Freeze are led by the play of Allen Eller and Stefan Ostergren, who have a combined 64 points on the season, and a veteran coach in Hector Marinaro.

7.  Las Vegas Legends  The Legends have played one game this whole season against a team with a winning record, San Diego, and in that game they got handled with the greatest of ease by the Sockers.  Their new acquisition, Israel Sesay, is a force on the field with the speed to burn defenses.  When Israel was playing with the Fury in Monterrey, it was the play of Sesay that impressed the Flashes announcers the most.  Maybe in the line up of the Legends Sesay can be the catalyst that brings out the best play of the Las Vegas squad.

8. Detroit Waza Flo  Detroit has won two in a row against 3-6 Cincinnati, but this weekend they have to travel to take on Cleveland and Harrisburg in their respective homes.  Last time the Freeze played Detroit the Waza won by a point, and the last time the Waza played the Heat, they lost by a point.  Detroit is in the 3rd spot of the East and needs to keep up with Cleveland who are 2 games ahead of them.

9. Saltillo Rancho Seco  Saltillo has a very difficult schedule this season and are coming off of a loss to Monterrey at home and will face Hidalgo in their next game, but they did handle the Fury at home and have the third best penalty kill in the PASL.

10. Ontario Fury  The Fury are in the #9 spot because the other teams that were at the bottom of the Stable all lost their games since last rankings, and the Fury beat Mexico in Ontario with ease.  The loss of Sesay is very damaging to the Fury, and I think that their ability to win in the playoffs is significantly hurt without him.

THE HERD

  • Mexico Toros
  • Cincinnati Saints
  • Harrisburg Heat
  • Wichita B-52's
  • Sacramento Surge
  • Turlock Express
  • Tulsa Revolution
  • Bay Area Rosal

THE DEUCE

1.  Texas Strikers  The only winless team in the PASL just lost a game to Premier team, Austin FC, and are the first team eliminated from the playoffs.

2.  Illinois Piasa  27-6

Lavishly's Lines Week #10

I apologize for not recapping week #9 and doing the power rankings last week.  My brother was in town so I took a little time off to hang out with him and his family. Plus, it is very hard to concentrate on the PASL with all of the "Playoff Fever" that has been sweeping through Southern California.  GO CHARGERS!

Wichita B-52's @ Dallas Sidekicks  Dallas -2 over/under 16  Final Score Dallas 6 Wichita 3  I got close on the spread, but missed the over/under.  Wichita is a much improved side since the beginning of the season and I think that they might have a legitimate shot at an upset when these two sides face off again on Saturday at the Hartman Arena.

4-3 Mexico Toros @ 2-6 Ontario Fury  Ontario's season is spinning out of control and a win at home would end their 6 game losing streak and give them some sort of a starting point to try and make a run to get into good standings in the Pacific Division.  As it stands, Ontario is 5 games out of first place with 8 games left in the season, but 4 of those games are against San Diego and Las Vegas.  It is too risky for the Fury to hope that Ontario gets picked as the destination for the Ron Newman Cup Finals, giving them a bye, so they need to start picking up W's to maybe sneak into the postseason, where anything can happen. Ontario -2 o/u 18

2-6 Turlock Express @ 7-1 Las Vegas Legends  The Express don't stand a chance against a high powered offense like the Legends have, especially in Vegas.  Legends will have another scoring party at the expense of the visiting Turlock side.  Las Vegas -7.5 o/u 16

5-4 Bay Area Rosal @ 1-8 Sacramento Surge  The Surge have won a game on the road, but now can they win one at home?  The Rosal say no. Bay Area -2 o/u 12

7-2 Dallas Sidekicks @ 3-5 Wichita B-52's  Wichita has a good shot at upsetting the Sidekicks at the Hartman Arena on Saturday night after their close game in Dallas on Thursday night.  If Matt Clare can have a big game, and the B-52's can convert at least 50% of their power plays, then the B-52's have a good chance of getting the upset. Dallas -1.5 o/u 15

1-8 Illinois Piasa @ 7-3 Cleveland Freeze  Wampus goes home happy.  Cleveland -5 o/u 13

7-1 Hidalgo La Fiera @ 0-8 Texas Strikers  Strikers have no chance.  Hidalgo -7 o/u 15

4-4 Detroit Waza Flo @ 3-5 Cincinnati Saints  Detroit seems to have turned the ship around after breaking their losing streak with a dominating win over the Saints at home.  The Waza now need to pick up some road wins beginning in Cincinnati, but the Saints will put up a better fight now they have seen the Waza Flo and will be taking them on at home in Cincinnati.  Detroit -1.5 o/u 17

9-1 Monterrey Flash @ 4-4 Saltillo Rancho Seco  Monterrey beat Rancho Seco last time they met, and I think the Flash will handle Rancho Seco in Saltillo another time.  Monterrey -2 o/u 14

6-2 San Diego Sockers @ 4-3 Toros Mexico  San Diego has made the trip to Tijuana before, so they know what they are up against.  The Toros are a dangerous team at home and will give the Sockers no quarter.  San Diego -2 o/u 14

1-8 Illinois Piasa @ 4-4 Detroit Waza Flo No way Illinois goes into Detroit and picks up a win against a Waza team which is getting their second wind of the season.  Detroit -4 o/u 12

3-5 Cincinnati Saints @ 8-0 Chicago Mustangs  Cincinnati will be too worn out from traveling to Detroit and playing a game against the Waza the night before and won't put up much of a fight against the undefeated Mustangs.  Chicago -5.5 o/u 15
